About the role

We are seeking a Manager Planning with expertise in planning and scheduling to lead the planning function in Resource Development at Rio Tinto Iron Ore. This role presents an outstanding opportunity to join a diverse team involved in the assessment of Tier One iron ore deposits in a globally renowned mineral province.

You'll oversee all planning aspects within Resource Development, from crafting the long-term integrated plan for drilling, earthworks, and rehabilitation, to orchestrating the weekly plan. In addition to planning accountabilities, this role also leads the contract management, cost governance and business improvement arm for the division, working closely with operational and technical leaders to drive maximum efficiency and productivity.

Reporting to the General Manager, Resource Development:

  • Lead a diverse team of professionals and manage multiple stakeholder relationships to ensure the development and delivery of Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s resource development programs
  • Lead all operational readiness requirements for annual and future exploration programs
  • Own short-term operational schedules to optimise the efficiency of Resource Development’s drilling and earthworks fleet
  • Co-ordinate key inputs into the Resource Development plan, namely work scopes and volumes, risks, resourcing models and funding; in collaboration with Technical SMEs, Studies, Approvals, Heritage, Accommodation, Procurement and Finance teams right across the Iron Ore Business
  • Coordinate and manage Resource Development’s contract partnerships
  • Develop and govern plan execution, in addition to manage best practice planning practices within Resource Development and driving a PDCA approach across the team

What you’ll bring

In this role, your success will be amplified by your adeptness at building robust relationships and influencing various facets of the business. Your influential leadership style will empower you to coach, develop, and inspire your team, drawing out their best qualities and fostering their growth.

You'll excel in engaging with multiple stakeholders to craft strategic plans and translate them into actionable delivery plans. Your proficiency in strategic and operational planning will be pivotal, as you navigate complexities and opportunities.

Experience leading diverse teams and strong exposure to scheduling and planning is highly desirable. Familiarity with contracts and contractor management will further enhance your ability to drive project success, in addition to demonstrated ability to lead and drive process change and improvements at an operational and commercial level.

While a solid understanding of resource evaluation processes is advantageous, it's not a prerequisite. However, a shared passion for continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence is essential for the successful candidate, driving the team towards excellence and pushing boundaries in pursuit of perfection.

We have been mining for 150 years and operate with knowledge built up across generations and continents. Our purpose is finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs – striving for innovation and continuous improvement to produce materials with low emissions and to the right environmental, social and governance standards.
