Communications Infrastructure Specialist
Barminco is seeking an experienced and technically driven Communications Infrastructure Specialist to join our Mining Technology team based in Hazelmere.
Reporting to the Manager Networks and Infrastructure, this newly established role will provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in the design, planning, delivery and support of communications infrastructure across Barminco's surface and underground mining operations.
Working closely with operational, project and technology teams, you will play a critical role in developing reliable and scalable communications solutions that support mining operations, operational technology systems, automation and future technology initiatives.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Design and develop communications infrastructure solutions for underground and surface mining operations.
- Develop high and low-level designs for fibre optic networks, structured cabling systems and wireless communications infrastructure.
- Establish and maintain communications infrastructure standards, specifications, asset records, and documentation.
- Support Operational Technology, automation, fleet management and digital mining initiatives through fit-for-purpose communications solutions.
- Engage with site operational and project teams to understand current and future connectivity requirements.
- Conduct site assessments and provide technical recommendations for infrastructure upgrades and expansions.
- Plan and coordinate communications network extensions for mine development and operational growth projects.
- Prepare scopes of work, technical specifications and implementation plans for communications infrastructure projects.
- Provide technical support and subject matter expertise for communications infrastructure across multiple mining operations.
- Support the installation, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of fibre, wireless and communications systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve communications infrastructure reliability, performance and scalability.
- Collaborate with Network Engineers, technology teams and site stakeholders to deliver effective connectivity solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship across the business to support successful technology outcomes.
Our Ideal Candidate Background Includes:
- Minimum 5 years' experience in communications, telecommunications, network infrastructure or related industrial environments.
- Proven experience designing and deploying fibre optic communications infrastructure.
- Experience with structured cabling systems and communications facilities.
- Strong understanding of industrial communications technologies including Wi-Fi, LTE, mesh networking, radio systems and leaky feeder networks.
- Practical knowledge of IP networking, switching and routing fundamentals.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting communications and network connectivity issues.
- Experience planning and coordinating infrastructure installations and network expansions in operational environments.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work across operations, projects, engineering and technology teams.
- Experience producing technical documentation, standards, drawings and scopes of work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Highly regarded:
- Experience within underground or surface mining environments.
- Experience with Rajant, LTE/Private LTE, wireless mesh or RF communication technologies.
- Experience with fibre distribution networks and communications backbone design.
- Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) environments and industrial networking concepts.
- Exposure to Cisco, Aruba, Fortinet or similar networking platforms.
- BICSI RCDD, fibre optic or telecommunications industry certifications.
Qualifications & Licences:
- Certificate III or IV in Telecommunications, Electronics, Information Technology or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
- Current Open Cabling Registration (ACMA compliant) with relevant endorsements, or ability to obtain.
- Current C Class Driver's Licence.
- White Card.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a National Police Clearance.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and drug & alcohol screening.
