About the Role
Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Geology, we are currently seeking experienced Geologists to join our BMA Technical Services Mine Geology team based at Blackwater and Daunia Mine on an 8:6 roster. This opportunity is open for both FIFO/DIDO or residential arrangement.
This role will focus on the site geology to ensure accurate geological knowledge is provided to the site stakeholders to deliver safe and efficient coal production.
In this role you will:
- Provide geological support to the site operational teams,
- Complete pit inspection / observation to maximise coal recovery, and minimise loss/dilution,
- Update 3D models of coal seams and geological features using pit observations, exploration drilling data, touch coal data and Measure While Drill data
- Perform highwall mapping to gather geotechnical and geological features
- Collaborate with broader geoscience team and stakeholders to ensure appropriate definition of geological features with the resource
- Provide geological input into mine plan designs for Geotechnical, Mine Scheduling and Operational teams
- Contribute to and identify continuous improvement and high value project management.
- Undertake geological data collection, interpretation, validation and reconciliations.
Divestment of Blackwater and Daunia Mines: On 18th October 2023, BHP announced that BHP and Mitsubishi Development have agreed to divest the Blackwater and Daunia mines to Whitehaven Coal. Whitehaven will assume operating control of the Daunia and Blackwater mines on completion of the sale, which is expected to occur in Q4 FY24. Whitehaven will provide an offer of employment to each employee directly supporting the Blackwater and Daunia mines. The successful candidate will receive an offer of employment and contract from BMA for the role, and once the role has commenced, they will receive a second contract from Whitehaven on conditions of employment that are no less favourable on an overall basis. The offer of employment from Whitehaven will start on Legal Day 1 once Whitehaven assumes operating control of Daunia and Blackwater Mines. Until Legal Day 1, BMA will maintain operating control of Daunia and Blackwater Mines.
About You
As the successful applicant, you will have:
- Experience with Vulcan and Geobank, with the ability to perform pit inspections, and exposure to geological database software is preferred but not essential
- Tertiary Education in Geoscience, with experience with open pit coal mining.
- Comprehensive knowledge of coal mining, structural geology and grade control processes
- You will be diligent, self-motivated and an excellent team player with positive relationship building skills, coupled with a high level of attention to detail.
- You will be required to liaise, negotiate and influence a range of internal and external stakeholders, so effective collaboration, stakeholder engagement and communication skills are critical.
- You will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and value the importance of building team culture through regular collaboration with team members and key stakeholders.
- A valid Australian Driver’s license is a pre-requisite.
