King of the Hills (KOTH) is Vault Minerals Limited's flagship operation and one of the largest gold mines in Australia. After a significant expansion, KOTH now features a 4.7 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) processing plant, providing a solid platform for long-term production growth. This dynamic operation combines open-pit and underground mining, with exciting exploration activities driving its future growth. KOTH is located approximately 900 km northeast of Perth and 25 km north of Leonora, within the Goldfields Region of Western Australia. 

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Graduate Geotechnical Engineer position will be involved in the initial stages of geotechnical projects, focusing on data collection, analysis, and reporting under the supervision of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer. Furthermore, monitoring of ground behaviour in conjunction with quality assurance and quality control duties will help optimise production while focusing on safety.

The position will be offered on an 8:6 roster FIFO from Perth.

Key responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Work under the guidance and instruction of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Further develop an understanding of procedures in respect to ground stability/ground monitoring/control, and mine infrastructure (underground and open pit)
  • Undertake a variety of underground and open pit geotechnical field work tasks in line with the role requirements, experience level, and business needs, e.g., core logging, sample collection and preparation, Q/Q’-mapping, wall mapping (Open Pit)
  • Conduct geotechnical data collection and analysis for ground support and stope design criteria.
  • Documentation of the behaviour of rock masses, along with quality control and quality assurance measures. 
  • Follow up on Rock Noise reports and communicate promptly.
  • Ensuring that all geotechnical-related data and information are methodically archived and stored in a manner that makes it accessible.
  • Conduct Monthly Ground Support Audits, providing methods for addressing key concerns (Issue additional support plans and defect notices).
  • Contribute to the development of a numerical model for underground workings to support mining activities.
  • Measure and visually assess the stability of the key pillars in the mine, guided by the Senior Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Assist the Senior Geotechnical Engineer in training underground crews on the importance of ground support and understanding the ground conditions.
  • Provide Geotechnical data and information for EOM Reports (underground and open pit).
  • Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team comprising underground and open-pit geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, geologists, environmental engineers, contractors, and consultants.

About You

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Science with a Geotechnical specialisation
  • Graduate Geotechnical Engineer with a minimum of 1 year experience in both underground and open-pit projects.
  • Developing an understanding of the statutory requirements of the Western Australian Mining Act and Regulations, as well as the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills.
  • Hold a current WA Driver’s License (manual C Class)
  •  Ability to learn appropriate mining software packages and tools: 
    • Deswik

    • AcQuire
    • GEM4D
    • Rocscience software (Unwedge, DIPS, RS3, and Slide2).
