About the Role

The Investment Evaluation team is part of the Portfolio Strategy and Development (PS&D) function, which brings together Investment Evaluation, Business Development, Corporate Development, Mergers & Acquisitions and Strategy; Market Intelligence.

Our purpose is to lead investment evaluation activities across the Company to drive better, faster investment decisions that shape BHP’s future. We achieve this by being trusted advisors for the most important investment decisions and by embedding investment evaluation best practices, capabilities and technology across the organization, ensuring the value of every business decision is clear.

The role reports to the Head of Investment Evaluation Corporate and will lead portfolio level analysis and provide expert guidance on valuation concepts to support capital allocation decisions, corporate strategy, business development, and execution of transactions. The successful candidate will require excellent financial analysis, commercial acumen, and stakeholder management skills.

Key accountabilities in this role include: 

  • Provide investment teams and senior management with expert guidance on corporate finance, valuation concepts and methodologies to support evaluation activities across projects, M&A and commercial transactions.
  • Lead financial analysis utilizing the BHP Corporate Model, providing insights on affordability, resilience and value maximization for the BHP portfolio.
  • Lead annual valuation workstreams such as the Portfolio Valuation Review (PVR), Cost of Capital and Country Risk Premium reviews and present recommendations to senior management
  • Challenge and influence strategic thinking. Effectively communicate valuation insights to senior management and key stakeholders, taking into account risk and uncertainty.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders across PS&D, Finance and broader BHP teams to ensure operational and macro-economic assumptions are internally consistent and our valuations are robust.  
  • Train and develop team members in corporate finance and valuation methodologies to enhance their skills and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the team.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Degree in a technical or business-related discipline; post-graduate qualifications (such as a Master's in Finance or an MBA) are highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial analysis and valuations in the resources or related industry (exposure to multiple commodities highly advantageous).
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance theory, capital markets operations, and their practical application to investment evaluation, along with advanced financial modeling and valuation skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of key issues in related disciplines such as legal, tax, treasury, accounting/reporting, corporate governance, investor relations, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to effectively present corporate finance theory and evaluation outcomes to influence senior stakeholders
  • Solid grasp of decision analysis methodologies, including framing and probabilistic analysis, and demonstrated commercial thinking with experience in making value-based business decisions.
  • Experience in managing a team of professionals to deliver valuation analysis for capital projects, transactions, and strategic plans.
