Materials Scientist

Work Location: Balcatta

Roster: Monday to Friday

This is an exciting opportunity to get in at the ground level of a rapidly expanding, dynamic, global green energy business. Fortescue Future Industries is currently undertaking rapid technology development and commercialisation and are seeking applications for a Materials Scientist. Reporting to and working closely with the Minerals Research and Development team, the Materials Scientist will support in the development of projects to produce green commodities. Candidates must be able to bring a flexible mindset, challenge traditional thinking, and be prepared to work outside of their comfort zone.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Develop new electrochemical and chemical materials for application into mineral processing and green energy industries
  • Lead the development of next generation materials for lower cost and greater efficiency for applications into minerals processing technologies and other areas
  • Interface with engineering group to translate basic research into commercial systems and applications
  • Assist in the identification and assessment materials technology acquisitions
  • Identify opportunities for research and development investment, and develop and manage external and internal R&D opportunities
  • Make recommendations for new materials technologies in Fortescue projects, and work with engineering teams to develop and implement solutions into manufacturing processes
  • Ensure IP protection of developed methods and processes through translating scientific research into patents.

Qualifications and skills required:

Candidates must be able to bring a flexible mindset, challenge traditional thinking, and be prepared to work outside of their comfort zone.

  • Doctorate in engineering, chemistry, materials science or physics with electrode materials or materials design experience
  • 5+ years’ experience in materials science, solid state materials, electrode materials, or similar technology development. 
  • Demonstrated track record in technology development.
  • Track record of materials development and deployment in commercial technologies advantageous 
  • Experience in commercialisation of technology advantageous
