ABOUTGEMCO

Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is an open-cut mine that is accountable for over 15% of the world's manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

This role is a Permanent position on a 4:3 Day shift roster, Residential on Groote Eylandt or FIFO from Darwin or Cairns may be considered.

As theOperator Site Services Mentor, you will be responsible for mentoring and guiding a trades team to deliver safe, high-quality construction and maintenance projects while supporting team growth.

Key deliverables for the role are, but aren’t limited to:

  • Providing on-the-job coaching, guidance, and supervision to ensure tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to high-quality standards across a variety of trades including carpentry, building, civil works, and maintenance.
  • Assisting the Team Supervisor in planning, resourcing, and coordinating operational schedules, ensuring projects are delivered on time and meet required specifications.
  • Actively promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture, identifying potential hazards, and supporting the team to follow compliance standards and best practice procedures.
  • Supporting Indigenous participation by mentoring trainees and apprentices, sharing trade knowledge, and creating opportunities for skill development and career progression.
  • Support the team’s  routine maintenance tasks that include tractor slashing, tipper truck, backhoe, forklift and bobcat operations.

ABOUT YOU 

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following: 

  • Practical hands-on experience across multiple construction and maintenance trades, with the ability to apply knowledge in diverse work situations.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to mentor and motivate a diverse team.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the capacity to manage multiple tasks, prioritise workloads, and adapt to changing operational needs.
  • Collaboration with stakeholders across teams and external partners to achieve project objectives and support workforce development initiatives.

Qualifications for this position are: 

  • Trade Certification: Carpentry/Builder qualification (Certificate III or higher) with specialisation in a related trade discipline – required.
  • Additional Trade Certification: Other maintenance trade qualification (Certificate III or higher).
  • Northern Territory Driver’s Licence
  • MR/HR Truck endorsement preferred
  • White Card (Construction Induction Card).
