About the Role
BHP is generating large amounts of data from different sources and envisioning to scale value and impact through delivery of emergent AI solutions. Reporting to the Manager Data Platforms, your task as Principal Data & AI Platforms Architect, is to provide expertise in the design and architecture of BHP’s core Data & AI platforms. Enabling delivery of end to end Data and AI solutions – optimising for velocity, scalability and sustainability through an integrated ecosystem. You will be working closely with customer groups, data and AI delivery teams, platform owners and architecture teams to provide advisory, producing and maintain re-usable design artefacts such as design patterns, standards and guidance notes. You will engage in a diverse range of project, architecture and strategic initiatives across various problem spaces and data domains, bringing your hands-on expertise in modern Data and AI centric technologies to the table to guide, propose, document and implement leading solutions leveraging world-class Data and AI platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expertise in guiding the design of solutions utilising or extending BHP’s core data platforms – such as Integration, Data Warehousing, Data Lakes, Business Intelligence/Visualisation, Advanced Analytics, AI/ML, Generative AI, Agentic AI frameworks and orchestration.
- Ensure architectural adherence and conformance throughout initiative and project lifecycle via architecture governance routines and engagements.
- Champion the adoption of BHP Data & AI platforms throughout the wider BHP, engaging various teams, articulating and demonstrating value and driving customer advocacy.
- Define, communicate and maintain standards, frameworks, guidelines and best practice design patterns for data platform orientated solutions.
- Fulfil (where necessary) both program architecture roles and solution architecture roles on projects.
- Pro-actively engage and collaborate with Global Architecture, Cyber Security, Data Platform Teams, Project Teams, Cloud & Network and other technology teams (Integration, ServiceNow, ERP, Microsoft 365 etc).
About You
- Extensive experience in architecting roles including technical architecture, solution architecture, data architecture, integration architecture and/or or enterprise architecture, together with several years professional exposure to modern Data and AI centric platforms, technologies and infrastructure - including enterprise data warehouses/data lakes, master data, integration platforms, visualisation, advanced analytics and emergent AI technologies (AI/ML, Generative AI, Agentic AI frameworks).
- 2+ years of experience architecting with data centric PaaS or SaaS services – cloud data warehouses, Microsoft Azure and AWS cloud data and AI services (e.g. S3, Sagemaker, Bedrock, OpenAI, Copilot Studio).
- Understanding of patterns, techniques and principles relating to enterprise integration (API, MFT, Data Integration, Pub/Sub and messaging), data warehousing, data hubs, advanced analytics solutions and emergent AI capabilities (AI/ML, Generative AI, Agentic AI).
- Proficient in architecture modelling (Archimate) and architecture modelling tools (e.g. iServer). Significant experience in architecture leadership and coordination roles on major data platform projects.
- Experience in the creation of data platform related standards, patterns and/or reference architectures. Proven stakeholder management and coaching skills. Drive for continuous learning/improvement and adaptable to new technologies and approaches.
Desirable:
- AWS or Azure certifications in cloud engineering and/or data engineering, Experience with Microsoft and Azure data and AI technologies – including Microsoft Fabric, Open AI, AI Foundry, Copilot and Copilot studio.
- Experience in design and architecture of emergent AI capability – including GenAI, LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG patterns, Agent implementation and frameworks.
