About the Role
Reporting into the Vice President Tax Minerals Australia, this position is accountable for all indirect tax affairs across the Asia Pacific and Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
The successful candidate will leverage their significant experience in managing or advising on a large-scale Australian indirect tax compliance program and in the provision of high-quality indirect tax advice.
This role is responsible for monitoring and acting as a thought leader on the indirect tax policy agenda through BHP’s participation in various Regional government and industry bodies. A key focus of the role will be to continue and optimise the delivery of BHP’s indirect tax processes to ensure accurate and timely indirect tax outcomes for both the Regional Assets (Minerals Australia) and the Corporate function for growth options.
Accountabilities of this role include:
• Providing accurate and timely advice on indirect taxes. • Managing the relationship with the ATO on indirect taxes. • Managing processes to ensure attendance to all indirect tax compliance obligations. • Reviewing new contracts and supporting negotiations with third parties. • Review of all Minerals Australia indirect tax inputs into BHP’s Economic Contribution Report. • Accountability for indirect tax input into Minerals Australia business plans and economic models (including models run as part of the Portfolio Valuation Review process). • Managing and providing input into industry and government initiatives that effect fiscal and economic changes including preparing the Vice President Tax Minerals Australia for meetings with relevant senior government officials and Members of Parliament as and when required. • Supporting the Vice President Tax Minerals Australia on indirect tax advocacy initiatives and other matters as and when required. • This position has coverage of the Asia Pacific (APAC) and wider Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) areas. Significant travel both domestic and international within these regions will be a core expectation of the role to support.
Location
This role must be based in Brisbane or Perth as part of our core Tax team hubs for Minerals Australia
Due to the geographic profile of the role, the successful candidate must be prepared to undertake international and domestic travel on a routine basis.
About You
You are a deep subject matter expert across all aspects of Indirect Tax in Australia and across broader trends in Consumption Taxes globally. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to develop and work within team-centric delivery mechanisms holding to the highest values of integrity, courage and care for others. You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to focus and prioritize critical deliverables to provide clear direction to a team of tax professionals supporting your work and broader stakeholders. The successful candidate will have sound judgement, leveraging from relevant experience and working effectively within complex projects. Minimum requirements that this candidate will bring are:
• Tertiary qualification (Bachelor’s Degree) in Law or Accounting; Master’s Degree in Tax Law and/or professional association membership preferred • Knowlege of relevant tax effecting accounting rules / regulations and experience in statutory tax reporting processes • Highly proficient in reviewing tax research outcomes and applying technical judgment across multiple jurisdictions • Proven tax experience at a senior level in a large multinational company or in an accounting or law firm working in the area of indirect tax (primarily in the area of Australian GST). • Deep knowledge of tax legislation, case law and administrative positions across the region • Significant experience in managing complex tax audits and negotiating tax settlements with regulators. • High degree of agility to adapt risk appetite and underlying frameworks, systems and processes to enable Commercial strategies and respond to both long-term market evolution and short-term market impacts • Distinctive, demonstrated leadership and influencing skills to engage across a diverse range of stakeholders • Focus on achieving results, learning and adapting to solve problems • Experience building, managing, and sustaining strong relationships with cross-functional internal customers as well as building trusting partnerships with external partners and stakeholders • Proven experience shaping inclusive, diverse, dynamic, and highly-performing global teams
