About Innovation Team

Think & Act Differently (TAD) is BHP’s innovation team, aiming to position BHP as a leader in mining innovation. We’re building a diverse team with experience across the mining value chain—from exploration to processing and tailings. While domain expertise is valuable, we’re especially seeking bold thinkers who challenge norms and ask, “what if?”

The focus include framing and communicating the value of innovation initiatives to support decision-making across TAD. Working with a fast-evolving portfolio of high-uncertainty technologies, you’ll influence thinking, challenge assumptions, and deliver clear insights to senior leaders and stakeholders.

About the Role

We are looking for a dynamic and analytical individual to join the Think & Act Differently (TAD) Innovation Team as a Principal Portfolio. This role is central to the Innovation Execution Team and works closely with a range of BHP groups, including Decision Evaluation, Value Engineering, Planning, and Technical teams.

As a key member of the TAD team, you will leverage your strong communication skills, business insight, and technical expertise to evaluate innovation initiatives and align them with broader strategic opportunities across BHP. You will also play a critical role in shaping portfolio management, prioritisation, and storytelling to support executive decision-making.

This role requires a strong analytical mindset and experience in valuation, modelling, probabilistic analysis, statistical evaluation, and trade-off studies. Your ability to build credibility through technical excellence, leadership, and clear communication will be essential.

You will collaborate with asset teams, decision evaluation groups, and functional planning and study teams to assess the value of emerging technologies and support the development of business cases for pilot programs and full-scale implementation. Energetic and detail-oriented, you thrive in fast-paced environments and can manage multiple priorities effectively.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide analytical support to Opportunity and Initiative Owners, Program Managers, and Business Partners for early-phase studies and opportunity assessments.
  • Conduct probabilistic evaluations of the innovation portfolio and associated options.
  • Support decision-making across TAD through trade-off studies and scenario analysis.
  • Develop cost models to help technical teams understand cost drivers and implications.
  • Maintain detailed cost analysis, benchmarking, and reporting for assigned areas.
  • Assist technical teams in identifying and framing value optimisation opportunities.
  • Collaborate across departments and functions to integrate inputs and insights.
  • Build strong working relationships to enhance project outcomes and the TAD team’s reputation.

About You

As the successful applicant you will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Proven experience in probabilistic and statistical evaluation.
  • Demonstrated valuation, modelling, and reporting skills in a commercial project context.
  • Degree qualified in Finance, Business, Accounting, or Engineering.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to coordinate multiple workstreams.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to “connect the dots” and navigate ambiguity.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Strong presentation and written communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and broad analytical capability.

Highly desirable:

  • CPA/CA or postgraduate qualifications.

Location and Roster

The role can be based in Australia corporate offices in Adeliade, Perth, or Brisbane. You will be working on Monday to Friday roster with 3-2-1 arrangement.
