About the Role

A great opportunity has arisen for Principal Signalling Engineer to work on an exciting major project at BHP, the Rail Technology Programme (RTP).  RTP is a transformational upgrade of WAIO’s train control and signalling system. RTP will deliver the words first heavy haul moving block signalling system. Moving block will allow trains and other rail-mounted vehicles to safely run much closer together, resulting in a substantial increase in the rail network’s capability along with a step-change improvement in safety.  Come and be a part of this success. 

Reporting to the RTP Engineering Manager in the RTP Engineering Governance Team, the role will have a strong focus on technical governance whilst retaining a delivery mindset. You will provide rail signalling expertise and support to the project providing a strong focus on stakeholder engagement, engineering process and have the capability to excel in a positive team environment. 

Accountabilities

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Review functional design documentation submitted by the contractor including system requirements and architecture, interface control, scheme plans, and analyses as appropriate
  • Manage and update signalling principles for the Rail Technology Programme and interface with BHP ISA for signalling related matters.
  • Review and approve contractor technical specifications and detailed design submissions to ensure compliance with user requirements, BHP signalling principles and relevant corporate and industry standards as per contract.
  • Assess whether hardware and functional design documentation that is produced is issued and controlled in accordance with company processes
  • Implement and govern the processes to manage signalling design documents and signalling related design data
  • Act as the delegated discipline lead for signalling in the Project CCB and represent RTP in the asset level Engineering Board (TRB).
  • Assist the project with design workshops, technical gate reviews and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical input for responses to technical queries and review technical reports
  • Develop and update standards or technical procedures 
  • Analysis of verification and validation and site testing activities
  • Act as client witness during FAT or SAT where required
  • Interface with Rail Engineering department to build technical readiness to receive new signalling technology/
  • Build strong relationships with the relevant stakeholders

About You

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  • From 15+ years in Railway Signalling projects or operations ideally in communication based signalling.
  • Experience in delivering engineering activities for complex signalling systems as ETCS / CBTC projects preferably for a digital railway.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (Electrical/Electronic) or recognised industry experience
  • Diploma or similar qualifications or extensive experience in Rail Signalling
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work within an integrated team and work effectively under pressure
  • Structured approach with strong attention to detail, and the ability to problem solve on complex issues.
  • Experience in the delivery of a Management of Change process
  • Experience in testing and commissioning of signalling systems
  • Expert level knowledge of industry standards (e.g. CENELEC, AREMA, RISSB) and company standard solutions
  • Data Analysis and report writing skills
