We are looking for a Senior Advisor – Water and Tailings Dams’ to provide technical support and advice to manage major hazards related to Water and Tailings Dams in the Asia Pacific region through effective engagement, communication, and collaboration with multiple assets.

This role is a great opportunity to provide technical support and assistance to the Closure portfolio for closing and legacy assets and is centred around the Rio Tinto commitment to safe closure. You will play a critical part in the Rio Tinto journey to achieving safe closure whilst mitigating risks associated with geotechnical related hazards.
Reporting to the Principal Advisor – Tailings and Geotech SME and working in a collaborative team and exciting environment you will:
- Ensure compliance with Rio Tinto’s Standards and Industry Standards and Guidelines with an emphasis on Water and Tailings Dams Risk Management in the Asia Pacific region, to ensure risks are appropriately identified and managed at all RT Closure sites.
- Support the RT Closure conformance to GISTM for closed and legacy assets.
- Identify hazards associated with water and tailings storage facilities, working closely and effectively with the assets to secure and provide appropriate technical and engineering support.
- Ensure water storage facilities are appropriately managed by the assets.
- Undertake technical review of deliverables and internal documents.
- Provide advice and guidance to Rio Tinto accountable persons (such as Responsible Dam Engineers, facility managers etc) in accordance with internal standards and guidelines.
- Provide technical review of work performed by external consultants
- Support the execution of internal and external assurance processes.
- Organise and take part in the organisation of independent technical reviews.
- Visit sites on an as needed basis for inspections and technical support.
What you’ll bring
- Tertiary qualifications in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, civil engineering or geological sciences.
- Significant experience (~8 years) working in the field of civil engineering, geotechnical engineering water dams and/or tailing dams.
- Ability to quickly build robust business-focussed relationships, establish credibility and influence internal and external stakeholders to drive consensus and collaboration.
- Ability to work on multiple subjects of different sites concomitantly.
- Proven experience and understanding of the design and construction of water dams.
- Demonstrated experience working on projects or studies in a team environment and implementing initiatives with a commitment to the safety of yourself and the team.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain productive technical networks.
- Experience in large, complex organisations with either a global or large regional spread.
- Ability to work with an interdisciplinary technical team in problem solving.
- Experience in managing consultants and contractors.
- Strong team skills and willingness to spend short durations on site (when required).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to speak a second language (French) is desirable.
