Located approximately 140 kilometres southwest of Mackay in Queensland's Bowen Basin, Coppabella Mine is a key Peabody operation producing premium pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal for steelmaking customers around the world. As part of our Technical Services team, you'll contribute directly to the geological insights and operational decisions that support safe, efficient mining and maximise value from this world-class asset.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Mining Geologist to join the Technical Services team at Coppabella Mine. Reporting to the Coal Quality & Logistics Superintendent, you will play a critical role in delivering accurate, timely and fit-for-purpose geological support that enables safe, efficient and value-driven open cut mining outcomes.

This is a highly influential role where your expertise will directly support coal recovery, geological risk management, short-term modelling and operational decision-making. You will also have the opportunity to supervise and mentor a Graduate Geologist, helping develop future mining talent while strengthening technical capability across the operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily coal reports, coal exposure tracking and clear communication of geological risks to operations.
  • Lead blast surface interpretation using mapping, drill data and structural inputs to support Drill & Blast execution.
  • Complete geological reconciliation activities to compare modelled versus actual geology and improve model accuracy.
  • Maintain and update short-term geological model surfaces in line with mine planning requirements.
  • Provide practical geological input across planning, geotechnical, production, coal quality and operational teams.
  • Conduct pit inspections, coal exposure validation and highwall mapping to support safe mining outcomes.
  • Support exploration drilling programs, including planning, budgeting, contractor coordination and database governance.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities across geological processes, reporting and data quality.

The Lifestyle

This position is offered on an 8/6 roster, providing a strong balance between career opportunity and time at home. The role is available as FIFO from Brisbane or DIDO.

At Peabody, we invest in our people and the environments they work in. We offer:

  • Financial & Practical Support: Domestic relocation assistance, per Peabody policy, and novated leasing options.
  • Site Comfort: Modern camp with quality meals, premium facilities and an onsite gym.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Access to 2,000+ health and lifestyle perks via WHEREFIT, complemented by private health insurance discounts.
  • Recognition & Growth: Access to industry-leading mentors and support for further formal study aligned to your expertise and our strategic goals.

About You

You will be a technically strong mining geologist with proven open cut coal mining experience and the confidence to translate geological information into practical, operational decisions. You will bring a strong safety mindset, sound judgement and the ability to build trusted working relationships across mining, planning, coal quality and technical teams.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Degree qualification in Geology, Geoscience or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in open cut coal mining operations.
  • Demonstrated coal commodity experience, which is essential for this role.
  • Strong capability in geological modelling, mapping and reconciliation processes.
  • Working knowledge of coal quality and its operational implications.
  • Experience supporting exploration drilling programs and geological database management.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate geological risk clearly to operational teams.
