About the Role

Our Major Maintenance Sentries

The Confined Space Sentry is a pivotal role who controls who goes into and out of the confined space and monitors all those within the confined space. This person must be always on duty and must not engage in alternate duties at any time. This person must also not enter the confined space as it is the role of this person to be the communication conduit and safety observer for everyone inside the Confined Space. That is, if those inside the confined space get into difficulty, it the Confined Space Sentry who will enact the Confined Space Emergency Response and Rescue Plan. This person should not take part in the rescue within the confined space itself. The Confined Space Sentry must have the same Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as those who are within the confined space to enable that person to peer into the confined space (with entering it).

In this role you will:

  • Maintain the confined space shift record and accurate headcount of all people within the confined space
  • Monitor all activities inside and outside of the confined space to determine whether it is safe for the workers to remain inside of the confined space.
  • To be competent trained and qualified in gas detection procedures and protocols (understand and operated the equipment) to ensure the safety of workers in the confined space.
  • Develop and maintain the Confined Space Clearance Certificate in accordance with the Confined Space Hazard Assessment, and ensure controls associated with these documents and the vessel Entry Permit are implemented.
  • Maintain effective and unbroken contact with ALL personnel within the space by utilising radio, mutually agreed, documented, and communicated hand signals, horns, lights, and the like.
  • Prevent the entry of any unauthorised personnel and equipment into the confined space
  • Order the evacuation of the confined space as necessary
  • Initiate the agreed emergency rescue plan and notify emergency services (as required by the plan)
  • To initiate and supervise the emergency rescue as per the Confined Space Rescue Plan (without entering the confined space)
  • Maintain, audit, and manage MME core confined space equipment and consumables.
  • Ability to perform alternate duties such as fire watch, working at heights spotter, general labourer duties supporting MME requirements.
  • Participate and lead Problem solving, 5s, MIP and all BOS routines.
  • Conduct and complete role confirmations, maintain a WILO.
  • Identify, rectify, and report through EMS hazards in the workplace.  
  • Field Leadership verification focused on safety of our people.

Please note this position is based at Olympic Dam, operating on a 7/7 Day Shift/Night Shift roster pattern arrangement, with residential or DIDO/FIFO options available.

About You

  • Have a sound experience in the management of confined spaces, processes and requirements, the applicant should be able to clearly demonstrate past experiences and knowledge.
  • Be suitably trained and qualified (confined space sentry, gas testing, fire watch, working at heights spotter)
  • Maintain, demonstrate, and promote an overriding commitment to health, safety and a culture that is inclusive for everyone.
  • Coach and develop peers, additional personnel to ensure their skills are optimised to maintain a safe working space.
  • Work closely with the Major Maintenance and Fixed Plant Integrity teams ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Be focused on working collaboratively to achieve results for our customers.
  • Able to communicate across multiple levels and disciplines.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license, with the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
