We are looking for a Specialist Social Investment, Communities and Social Performance (CSP) to advise on evidence-based social investment strategies to meet the community’s needs and aspirations. The Specialist will coordinate the Rio Tinto Community Fund, maintain strong community partnerships, and administer a Board made up of company and community representatives. This role maintains a local knowledge base to support evidence-based practice including oversight of the Gladstone Social Economic Impact Assessment.
The role is part of the larger Community and Social Performance global team that provides expertise and advice across all aspects of stakeholder engagement, communication, media relations, social risk and Cultural Heritage management. The team is responsible for managing social performance outcomes, relationships with key leaders in the Gladstone region and further afield, as well as maintaining a range of internal and external communication channelsWhat the role entailsWe are looking for an experienced community development or community engagement professional to nurture community partnerships to lead a social investment strategy with positive impact. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills are essential to build relationships with community leaders, industry partners and internal stakeholders.
Based in Gladstone and reporting to the Manager Communities and Social Performance Gladstone, you will:
- Apply professional knowledge and expertise to develop and lead strategy for the implementation of social investment and regional economic development to support community needs and aspirations and address key social risks of the Gladstone operations.
- Manage the Rio Tinto Community Fund, including administration of an Advisory Board, partnership liaison and project evaluation, budget management and brand awareness.
- Establish evidence-based investment plans and priorities aligned to the Rio Tinto Social Investment for Impact 2030 – Strategy and Framework.
- Manage the Gladstone knowledge base including the Gladstone Social Economic Impact Assessment, to support evidence-based practice to deliver impactful social investments and to align with the Rio Tinto CSP Standards.
- Identify initiatives and appropriate partners to deliver social investment and economic development projects aligned with the investment plan.
- Monitor social impact by maintaining strong relationships with funding partners, establishing contracts and KPIs and overseeing Board reports and funding evaluations and acquittals.
- Lead and engage professional services for the delivery of discrete projects as required.
- Develop and maintain favourable relationships with the surrounding community and internal and external stakeholders.
- Represent the organisation at community gatherings and/or role-related forums and initiatives linked to investment opportunities including networking opportunities
What you will bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- A qualification in community development, economic development or community engagement, or a minimum of five years in related occupations.
- An understanding of impact-driven social investment, monitoring and evaluation.
- Proven stakeholder management skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong administrative skills to manage social investment processes, administer a Community Advisory Board, maintain records and manage budgets.
- A collaborative approach and the capability to work in a team environment.

Rio Tinto Aluminium – Yarwun Operations
With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.
Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
Along with Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited, our Yarwun Operation supports the local community in a wide range of initiatives through Here for Gladstone.
