About the Role

We are seeking a Train Control Supervisor to lead a team of highly skilled Train Controllers responsible for the safe and efficient movement of rail vehicles across our world-class autonomous heavy haul railway. This is a pivotal leadership role, ensuring adherence to Rio Tinto Rail Rules and Procedures, while driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

As a Train Control Supervisor, you will:

  • Lead and support Train Controllers to ensure safe, efficient, and productive rail operations

  • Oversee and manage safety-related incidents, delays, and escalations, applying a people-centred approach

  • Conduct daily leadership activities, including shift-start meetings, coaching, and shift handovers

  • Drive compliance with safety rules, risk management, and operational standards

  • Develop and mentor team members through regular check-ins and performance reviews

  • Foster a positive, inclusive team culture aligned with Rio Tinto’s values

  • Manage workforce planning and rostering to ensure sufficient coverage and fatigue management

What You Will Need

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, and mentor a team in a high-pressure operational setting

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ensuring clarity in instruction and open, respectful dialogue

  • Ability to identify and manage psychosocial hazards, fostering a mentally healthy and supportive workplace

  • A proactive approach to risk management, with the ability to identify, assess, and address safety concerns

  • Capability to make quick, well-informed decisions, balancing safety and operational efficiency

  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently

  • Adaptability and resilience, maintaining a composed and solutions-focused approach under pressure

  • Experience in a rail or safety-critical operational environment is desirable, but not essential

Where you will be working

This role is being offered in Perth based out of our Operations Centre, near the Perth Airport. Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 17 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.5 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
